Six Tips to Getting the Best Headshots and Business Portraits

Most people use their headshots and business portraits for several years so it's worth planing ahead. Here are a few tips to end up with portraits that you will be happy with:

Know what kind of image you want to portray. If your company is laid-back and casual then maybe that’s how you should dress. If you are selling million dollar properties then maybe you should dress like a million bucks. Usually it’s somewhere in between, but if your not sure bring both outfits so you have one that is more formal business and one that's more casual.

Avoid busy clothing and distracting backgrounds. The goal of any fine portrait is to direct the viewer's eye to the face. To help with this we suggest simple, long sleeved garments in medium to dark tones and muted colors. If you're not sure what to wear bring several outfits to your shoot and we will help you decide the best ones that work for you. The background should be out of focus and compliment the subject. A large majority of studio headshots are on a white or gray background that will look best for a wide variety of applications.

Bring clothing that fits. If your weight has changed since you last wore that jacket or shirt make sure they still fit you well. It looks unprofessional to wear a jacket that's two sizes too large or too small. It may be time to update your wardrobe.

Know how your portraits are going to be used. Let us know what your going to do with your headshots. Are they just for your website or are you going to use them in a print ad? Will it be vertical or horizontal format? Do they need to match your co-workers or a specific corporate look? Do you need your files in web resolution, print resolution, or both? Sharing these things with the photographer will help you get the portraits you need.

Go with a photographer with experience and a portfolio. If you are investing the time to get new headshots don’t waste it on a photographer or friend without a proven track record of getting great shots. The internet is strewn with bad headshots that were taken with the good intentions of a friend or co-worker.

Stop putting it off. You want people to recognize how you look today and not be distracted by how much younger you look on your business card or website. Call us today for fresh new business portraits that make you look your best. We promise it's easier than you think.
